I had ambitions of writing a Reformation Day post to accompany Jake’s. However, alas, I failed, so here instead is a little ditty about Martin Luther. (HT: JT)

Reformation Day, part one
Posted by Jake | Category: a beautiful broken body | Leave a Comment
Today marks 491 years since Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the church door in Wittenburg. And Christianity hasn’t been the same since.
Seeing as Eric and I are more or less reformed in our theology, it seemed like a good idea for both of us to post something about it today.

Going to Egypt and Assyria

“Is Israel a slave? Is he a homeborn servant? Why then has he become a prey? The lions have roared against him; they have roared loudly. They have made his land a waste; his cities are in ruins, without inhabitant. Moreover, the men of Memphis and Tahpanhes have shaved the crown of your head. Have [...]

f you think of it, pray for Zambia today. Today is the day they choose who will finish the last three years of Levy Mwanawasa’s term. (Mwanawasa was in the middle of his second term when he died from complications related to a stroke a few months ago. He was making significant strides in cleaning [...]

New from Tim Keller
Posted by Jake | Category: weighty tomes and word-filled treasures | Leave a Comment
Tim Keller wrote another book. I would write more than that, but really, what more do you need to know? It’s Tim Keller, so you know it will be good.
Here’s his explanation of the title. I found the last paragraph especially helpful:
“During the years I was working on these two books, my provisional titles were [...]

How do we read the Old Testament?
Posted by Jake | Category: fides quarens intellectum | 1 Comment
Perhaps one of the greatest shifts in my thinking that has come from moving closer to the reformed tradition has been in the way I read the Old Testament. Growing up, the Old Testament was seen primarily as a compendium of moral teachings that we ought to apply to our lives. We read about David’s [...]

Review - Losing God
Posted by Eric | Category: weighty tomes and word-filled treasures | Leave a Comment
It has been awhile since I read a book that really grabbed my gut and wouldn’t let go. I’ve read lots of personal memorials about faith journeys, but I can honestly say that Losing God be Matt Rogers is one of the better recent ones I’ve had the chance to review. In recounting his struggles [...]

The Bible as Drivers License?
Posted by Jake | Category: fides quarens intellectum | Leave a Comment
I’m currently reading Christopher Wright’s excellent book The Mission of God. It’s a tome and it’s going to take me most the semester to get through all of it, but I found this thought helpful:
Wright suggests that we have two true and biblical ways of describing scripture’s authority. The first, and more common use, is [...]

Ashanti Prayer for Blessing
O Lord, O God,
creator Of Our land, our earth, the trees,
the animals and humans, all is for your honor
The drums beat it out, and people sing about it,
and they dance with noisy joy that you are the Lord.
You also have pulled the other continents out of the sea.
What a wonderful world you [...]

My Two Cents on All Saint’s Ev(il)?
Posted by Eric | Category: jesus where we live today | 1 Comment
Halloween is fast approaching, and as usual there are some good blog posts up discussing the issues involved. I’d recommend reading both Michael Spencer and Doug Wilson on the topic, as I think they both have some thought-provoking insights. I realize this has been an emotional issue for many, but I thought I’d chip in [...]
